川崎の匠の技を結集し、「時」と「周年」を刻む公共時計

A Public Clock That Brings Together Kawasaki’s Master Craftsmanship to Mark Time and Commemorate the City’s Anniversary

川崎市制100周年を記念する「かわさきマイスター記念品制作」の一環として、「KAWASAKIマイスタークロック」の企画・デザイン・ディレクションを担当しました。

（現在、川崎市役所第3庁舎ロビーに設置中）

本プロジェクトでは、「時」と「周年」を象徴する壁時計を、メイド・イン・川崎で制作することを目指しました。金属へら絞り、精密研削加工、特殊塗装という異なる分野のかわさきマイスター4名が協働し、それぞれの高度な技能を一つの時計に結集しています。

As part of the commemorative product development project celebrating the 100th anniversary of Kawasaki City, sanodesign was responsible for the planning, design, and creative direction of the **KAWASAKI Meister Clock**.

(Currently installed in the lobby of Kawasaki City Hall’s No. 3 Building.)

The project aimed to create a wall clock made entirely in Kawasaki as a symbol of both **time** and the city’s **centennial anniversary**. Four Kawasaki Meisters from different fields—metal spinning, precision grinding, and specialized coating—collaborated to bring their advanced skills together in a single timepiece.

時計本体には、アルミ板を回転させながら立体的に成形する「へら絞り」の技術を採用。大きく緩やかな曲面は、周囲の景色や光を映し込み、設置される空間によって異なる表情を見せます。文字盤中央には特殊塗装を施し、奥行きのある宇宙的な印象を表現しました。

時刻を示す目盛りと3色のリングには、精密研削加工の技術を生かしています。3本のリングは時針・分針の動きに連動し、午前0時と正午になると、川崎市の市制100周年ロゴを想起させる「川」の字が現れる仕掛けを組み込みました。時計としての機能に、周年を感じる一瞬の発見と遊び心を加えています。

The clock body was formed using **metal spinning**, a technique in which an aluminum sheet is shaped three-dimensionally while rotating. Its broad, gently curved surface reflects the surrounding scenery and light, allowing the clock to take on a different appearance depending on the space in which it is installed. A specialized coating was applied to the center of the dial to create a deep, cosmic impression.

Precision grinding techniques were used to produce the hour markers and three colored rings. These rings move in conjunction with the hour and minute hands. At midnight and noon, they align to form the Japanese character **川**, meaning “river,” which recalls the Kawasaki City centennial logo. This mechanism adds an element of discovery and playfulness to the clock’s practical function.

市役所や学校など、多くの人が日常的に利用する公共空間に設置することで、時間を確認するたびに市制100周年と、川崎のものづくりに携わるマイスターの技術を身近に感じてもらうことを意図しました。完成品は川崎市役所本庁舎で展示され、その後も常設時計として使用されています。

The clock was designed for installation in public spaces such as city offices and schools, where many people could encounter it in their daily lives. Each time visitors check the time, the clock offers an opportunity to reflect on Kawasaki City’s 100th anniversary and the craftsmanship of the Kawasaki Meisters. The completed clock was exhibited at Kawasaki City Hall and remains permanently installed there.

デザインを進めるにあたっては、各マイスターの工房を訪ね、加工可能な形状や素材、技術的な限界を確認しながら詳細を調整しました。単に複数の技術を並べるのではなく、それぞれの技能が見た目と機能の両面から伝わるよう、構造、表面仕上げ、可動機構を一体として設計しています。

During the design process, we visited each Meister’s workshop to confirm feasible forms, materials, production methods, and technical limitations. Rather than simply combining several techniques, we developed the structure, surface finishes, and moving mechanism as an integrated design so that each craftsperson’s expertise could be clearly expressed through both appearance and function.
