木質化と情報整理によって、使いやすく居心地のよい公共空間へ

川崎市中原区役所のリニューアルにおいて、木質化を軸とした空間デザイン、サイン計画、什器や備品のデザインを担当しました。

区役所は、年齢、国籍、身体条件、来庁目的の異なる多くの方が利用する公共空間です。そこで、見た目を新しくするだけではなく、現地調査を通して案内、待合、窓口、動線、プライバシーなどの課題を整理し、職員の方々との対話を重ねながら改善策を検討しました。 

サイン計画では、遠くからでも目的地を把握できる視認性と、既存の表示や建築との整合性を重視。色数を抑え、木材を基調とすることで、情報が過密にならない落ち着いた環境を構成しました。英語表記やオリジナルピクトグラムも取り入れ、多様な来庁者への分かりやすさに配慮しています。

Creating a More Accessible and Welcoming Public Space through Wood-Based Design and Clearer Information

For the renovation of the Nakahara Ward Office in Kawasaki City, we were responsible for the spatial design centered on the use of wood, as well as the signage plan and the design of furniture, fixtures, and related equipment.

A ward office is a public space used by people of different ages, nationalities, physical abilities, and purposes of visit. Rather than simply refreshing its appearance, we conducted on-site research to identify issues related to guidance, waiting areas, service counters, circulation, and privacy. Through ongoing discussions with the staff, we then developed practical improvements.

For the signage plan, we placed particular emphasis on visibility from a distance and consistency with the existing architecture and signage. By limiting the color palette and using wood as the primary material, we created a calm environment in which information does not feel visually overcrowded. English-language notation and original pictograms were also incorporated to make the space easier to understand for a wide range of visitors.

Renewal Before/After

腰壁には国産スギ材を連続して用い、上部には軽快な木製ルーバーを配置しました。既存タイルの寸法やリズムに合わせることで、後から加えた素材が建築から浮かず、従来の空間と自然につながるよう調整しています。

Japanese cedar was used continuously along the lower wall surfaces, with lightweight wooden louvers installed above. By aligning their dimensions and rhythm with the existing tilework, the newly added materials were integrated naturally into the architecture rather than appearing as separate additions.

また、窓口カウンターの高さや配置、車椅子利用者の動線、マイナンバー関連ブースのプライバシーなど、利用者と職員双方の使いやすさも見直しました。

We also reviewed the height and layout of service counters, circulation routes for wheelchair users, and privacy within booths related to the My Number system, improving usability for both visitors and staff.
